This course is designed for you, the educator.

Participants will leave armed with the knowledge to implement changes in their own classrooms to engage learners in researched-based, scientifically sound, best practices for literacy and content area instruction.
Throughout this course you will be able to:
  • Define and summarize key aspects of the Science of Reading.
  • Connect research based instructional practices for literacy to their current classroom practices.
  • Explain multiple models for how brains develop and learn to read and how this informs instructional practices. 
  • Engage in reflection to determine instructional shifts needed to ensure best practices of literacy instruction are utilized in classrooms.
  • Explain the essential components of literacy instruction.
  • Explain the importance of age-based considerations, needs of specific learners, recommended assessments and interventions, as well as research-aligned instructional practices for literacy components. 
  • Identify specific instructional considerations for components of literacy to inform both instruction and intervention.

Carrie Brockway

Director of Professional Learning, ROE 4
About
Carrie Brockway is the Director of Professional Learning at ROE 4. She has dedicated nearly a quarter century to educational excellence. She began her career as a third-grade teacher, earning the Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence as the youngest recipient of the award. Carrie has also taught a variety of elementary and secondary coursework at the collegiate level for many years, with a strong focus on literacy instruction for graduate and undergraduate courses at Rockford University. She continues to lead professional development in best practices in reading and math instruction across the country.

Kimberlee Wagner

Associate Professor of Education Reading Specialist Program Director, Rockford University
About
Kimberlee Wagner teaches literacy courses in the early childhood, elementary, and reading specialist programs. Before moving to Illinois in 2003, she spent six years teaching elementary grades in Southern California. In Illinois, Kimberlee taught art, music, Title I Reading, and Reading Recovery in several local school districts. See received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies, her MAT in Reading, and recently completed her Ed.D in Reading, Language, and Literacy. Her research interests are guided reading and professional development practices for teachers.
